Meditation is gaining traction among health and fitness enthusiasts for many reasons.  From reduced stress and anxiety levels to improved focus and concentration.  It is one of the success habits of highly effective individuals.  How can it benefit you in your everyday life…read on!

What is Meditation?   –   Unlike any normal waking state, meditation is a precise technique for allowing an individual to rest the mind and achieve a state of inward focus.  Even though you are fully awake, your mind is clear and relaxed and not focused on the external world or the events happening around you.  In other words, meditation helps to block out the constant “chatter” taking place in your mind.

Elements of Meditation   –  “The goal of meditation isn’t to control your thoughts, it’s to stop letting them control you.”

The mind itself is your biggest obstacle when it comes to meditating and developing an awareness of your inner state.  Your mind has a mind of its own.  This is why, to achieve a true meditative state requires more than just sitting in silence for a certain amount of time.

Finding a space that is quiet and undisturbed is important to give yourself the best opportunity to relax and achieve calmness. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing.  Slow, deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth.  Stay focused on your breathing, being mindful of each breath you take.  Start with 10 to 15 minutes each day.  Each time you enter this meditative state will be better that the previous.  Regular practice is necessary.  Over time, you will develop the ability to achieve a greater focus power and will find it easier to concentrate on your inner self.

Benefits of Meditation  –  The benefits of calming the mind and body through meditation are many.  No two people are the same, so the benefits will vary from person to person, however here are a few of the more common benefits:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety levels
  • Improved attention and focus
  • Increased self-awareness
  • Increased happiness
  • May slow down the aging process

You may see progress in different ways from physical relaxation to emotional calmness.  Some benefits may not be dramatic or easily observed.  Persistance is the key here.  Over time, you will find that meditation provides you with an opportunity to free yourself from the constant “chatter” or worries that may be clouding your mind.  Give it a go and experience the many benefits of meditation.

Quiet the mind and the Soul will speak
